Backup UT quarterback a suspect in assault

April 9th, 2008 by AustinSportsReport

Backup John Chiles is currently a suspect in an assault-by-contact being investigated by the Austin Police Department, according to the department’s Public Information office.

This info comes to us by way of The Daily Texan, who has the info up on their sports blog, Views From the Press Box.

Apparently the Texan got a tip from an email signed “concerned citizen and undergraduate.” The email depicts Chiles riding in a vehicle with a teammate and slapping a woman inside. This is still unconfirmed.

Texas is best non-Final Four team

April 8th, 2008 by AustinSportsReport

If you believe the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, Texas was the best college basketball team to not reach the Final Four.

The Longhorns were named the No. 5 team today after Kansas, Memphis, North Carolina and UCLA. This was probably done assuming D.J. Augustin and Damion James are coming back. Augustin said after receiving the Bob Cousy Award on Monday that the decision would be tough and he’d have a decision in a week or two.

Without Augustin, Texas’ stock drops severely.

Texas swimming SID wins award; media puzzled

April 7th, 2008 by AustinSportsReport

Travis Feldhaus, the Texas sports information director in charge of media relations for the Longhorns swimming teams, was named the best swimming SID by Swimming World magazine.

This is a little unexpected for local media, as Feldhaus is a notoriously bad SID in terms of returning phone calls and emails from reporters, let alone setting up interviews. Part of the problem, though, is Feldhaus is also the SID for the men’s and women’s golf teams and tennis teams. No other SID has more than two teams to themselves, whereas Feldhaus has six.

D.J. Augustin less confident about staying at UT

April 7th, 2008 by AustinSportsReport

We just got word that D.J. Augustin said, while accepting the Bob Cousy Award, that he has a “tough decision” to make about whether or not he’ll jump to the NBA.

Sounds like he’s a little less sure than he was earlier this year when he said he was staying in Austin for next year. Augustin also said he’d have a decision “a week or two.” He has until April 27 to put his name in for the draft.

Backup UT quarterback G.J. Kinne to transfer

April 4th, 2008 by AustinSportsReport

Texas’ former fourth-string quarterback has decided to transfer. Somewhere.

After redshirting a year and watching classmate John Chiles ascend to the backup position, G.J. Kinne announced through a Texas media relations press release that he wants to transfer but hasn’t picked a new destination.

“I chose the best school at what was the end of a very successful, but difficult high school career,” Kinne said in the release. “I have definitely become a better quarterback with the help of one of the most knowledgeable offensive coaches in college football, Greg Davis. However, the quarterback position is unique in terms of playing time, and I have to find a program that best fits my skills.”
