This info comes to us by way of The Daily Texan, who has the info up on their sports blog, Views From the Press Box.

Apparently the Texan got a tip from an email signed “concerned citizen and undergraduate.” The email depicts Chiles riding in a vehicle with a teammate and slapping a woman inside. This is still unconfirmed. (more…)

The Longhorns were named the No. 5 team today after Kansas, Memphis, North Carolina and UCLA. This was probably done assuming D.J. Augustin and Damion James are coming back. Augustin said after receiving the Bob Cousy Award on Monday that the decision would be tough and he’d have a decision in a week or two.

Without Augustin, Texas’ stock drops severely.

Travis Feldhaus, the Texas sports information director in charge of media relations for the Longhorns swimming teams, was named the best swimming SID by Swimming World magazine.

This is a little unexpected for local media, as Feldhaus is a notoriously bad SID in terms of returning phone calls and emails from reporters, let alone setting up interviews. Part of the problem, though, is Feldhaus is also the SID for the men’s and women’s golf teams and tennis teams. No other SID has more than two teams to themselves, whereas Feldhaus has six. (more…)

After redshirting a year and watching classmate John Chiles ascend to the backup position, G.J. Kinne announced through a Texas media relations press release that he wants to transfer but hasn’t picked a new destination.

“I chose the best school at what was the end of a very successful, but difficult high school career,” Kinne said in the release. “I have definitely become a better quarterback with the help of one of the most knowledgeable offensive coaches in college football, Greg Davis. However, the quarterback position is unique in terms of playing time, and I have to find a program that best fits my skills.” (more…)

For anybody confused by our Instant Updates RSS on the left and why it was talking what might’ve seemed like a bunch of nonsense, we were at an online journalism symposium on the UT campus today and phoneblogging via twitter (really hate that name) for another organization.

The symposium is also a big reason why we didn’t have any posts up earlier today.

Also, we have gotten a few comments correcting our posts, and we love it. Seriously, one of the things we’ve never quite liked about blogs as opposed to more formal news organizations is the lack of an editing process. So we’re glad you all are helping us, and we apologize for the sloppiness lately.

If you’re a subscriber you’ve probably already got the letter explaining this, but for you newsstand junkies out there (if there are any left in the U.S.) the Houston Chronicle - the 10th-largest paper in terms of circulation - can’t get any copies the whole 165 miles to Austin.

So, no more hometown Astros, Rockets or Texans coverage for you Houstonians out there living in the Capitol City. To be clear, you won’t be getting this Sunday’s paper.

According to the letter, “economic factors caused this decision; specifically, extremely high transportation costs, driven by gasoline prices.”

We have a feeling the dying out of printed news products is more the root of this problem, but we do appreciate a soid explanation. In the end, though, blaming gas prices is placing the responsibility somewhere else instead of facing the truth about the industry. (more…)

This had nothing to do with the Tigers killing Texas in the Elite Eight, but backup Memphis guard Andre Allen was suspended Wednesday after what was reportedly a failed drug test.

It’s not known yet whether or not it was steroids, narcotics or some good-ole-fashioned marijuana. Either way, he didn’t make the trip to San Antonio, and it sucks for him and the Memphis team that this came out today.

Allen only played 12 minutes and scored just three points against Texas last week, so there is absolutely no reason to think there’s anything fishy about the Memphis players or that they somehow had their performance enhanced. So don’t say it, for our sake and everyone else. (more…)
